in with michele obama, a portion of michele obama's speech, what did you think of it? >> it was a great speech, it really was. so many personal anecdotes you could visualize. we were talking last week about how ann romney said a lot of great things about mitt romney but never gave you the visuals. john said it best. who in america are in that convention hall -- or in that convention hall watching the speech didn't get the image of a loving father struck with ms, seeing his two children sat the top of the stairs and fighting and struggling to get up those stairs to hug his children at the end of the day or fighting and struggling to get out of bad to go to work to give them a slice of the american dream. it was an absolutely fantastic speech. and the great line, absolutely loved the line, that being president doesn't change who you are, it reveals who you are. >> very personal, very revealing but it also might have accomplished something in terms of touching on some key areas that might have needed some work, not that the president, you would think, had a problem with the women's vote. >> right

michele obama will fire up the base. she'll be joined by julien castro the first hispanic american to give a keynote speech at a democratic convention. can they energize key groups, african-americans, hispanics, latinos and young people. they're coming to sit here in the rain. also virginia looms as one of the most important states this fall. both for president obama's re-election and the senate. who's going to control it. former governor tim kaine coming right here. he's the great hope of the democrats in that state. he'll be here later. let me finish with michele obama and the effect her words could have at this convention. this is "hardball," the place for politics. hey. hey eddie. i brought your stuff. you don't have to do this. yes i do. i want you to keep this. it'd be weird. take care. you too. emanuel, mayor julian castro, michelle obama, and most potently, bill clinton. if they send these people home, the obama people are blowing a golden opportunity. if they equip them, commission them, engage with them and send them on the road, they will have a team of confederates that will constitute the greatest partisan cavalry charge in history. joining me right now is eugene robinson of "the washington post," pulitzer price winning columnist, and the indefatiguable steve smith, who stays true to his party surrounded by all kinds of hostile forces. thank you, steve smith. i want to start with gene and then to steve quickly. what has to be different in the president's speech tonight, which we're told is going to be relatively brief, compared to the great speech he gave in 2004 and again in 2004. >> i don't think he can be just poetry. i don't think he can be just hope and change. for obvious reasons. so i think it has to be more specific than that. i do think it has to be forward looking. i don't think a whole lot of this is the mess george bush left us in is going to play right now. i

a specific thing they wanted to do. michelle obama did the character. bill clinton did the unprecedented economic argument. and then president obama did the, you know, hey, the -- made the case for looking forward. each night seemed to have a theme that fit together. look at tampa. you did not have the same thing. it was all about trying to fix the likability ratings, but not a lot of memorable specific details for instance on what a mitt romney presidency would look like. >> yeah. and democrats have been chiding the republicans for not putting more meat on the bones on their ideas. on the other hand, the president's advisers promised there would be specifics in the speech. did you hear any new policy or substance? >> i heard nothing new. more of a -- you know, look, the incumbent trying to make the don't change horses in midstream and making the case that the same ideas he's been advocating that haven't been passed. he will now push to try to them be passed. you didn't hear, you know what, this is going to be how we'll deal with the debt and deficit or entitlement reform or how we'll de
